Royce's Choice: the 5-10-1.

Five minutes each morning. 5 things you were grateful for yesterday, 10 desires you want to manifest, and 1 core way you'll live today to bring them about.

Why the name? It's an exercise I did growing up. It shaped much of what I'm doing today, and it works.

How it works

Look back. Look ahead. Choose today.

Three short lists, in this order, every day. Write them down, on paper or in the app. Writing makes them specific.

5

Things you were grateful for yesterday

Start by looking back. Anything at all, from the way your spouse smelled that morning to an answered prayer. Big or small, be specific.

  • A client who said thank you
  • Dinner with the kids, phones away
  • A hard conversation that went well

10

Desires you want to manifest

Then look ahead. Write each one as if you can already see it: work, home, health, faith. Keep yesterday's ten and sharpen them, rather than starting over.

  • A team that runs the Monday meeting without me
  • Home for dinner five nights a week
  • A leadership team I trust completely

1

Core way you'll live today

Last, choose the character you'll show today. This is how your desires come to be: through who you are while you work toward them.

  • With patience
  • As a servant leader
  • With integrity in the small things

Making it stick

Five minutes, every day

The practice is simple. Keeping it is the work.

  1. Same time, same place. First thing in the morning, with your coffee and before your phone, works well.
  2. The five change daily. The ten change slowly. New gratitude every morning; the same desires, sharpened as they come into focus.
  3. Live the one. Look at it again at midday. At night, ask yourself one question: did I?
  4. Count the days. A streak keeps you honest. Miss a day? Start again tomorrow.
  5. If faith is part of your life, pray it. The five are your thanksgiving, the ten are your requests, and the one is how you'll walk today.

For coaching clients

Keep it in your coaching app

Every RMC Capital Coaching client gets their own app, and the 5-10-1 is the first thing on its Today screen. It walks you through all three lists in about five minutes, carries yesterday's ten forward, reminds you at the time you pick, and counts your days in a row.

Olivia is a made-up client, eight weeks in. Explore freely: nothing you do there is saved or sent.

The one is where coaching starts: living it at work and at home. If you'd like help with that, let's talk.
